for my choice project I decided that a plate would be a nice addition to my collection of ceramics at home, though not the best form this plate is probably one of my favorite projects because it was my most successful plate so far, I love the glaze, it reminds me of the ocean, which is why I am currently making a set of 4; 4 bowls, 4 cups, 4 plates.
Shaped like a honey pot but as blue as the sea, this project though seemed hard at first actually turned out to be quite enjoyable. The lid I didn't do correctly but still worked out pretty well. I currently use it for change. The glaze doesn't look perfect but it'll do, overall I am really surprised with my success in this project.
I honestly wish I could do this project over again, it's really heavy, the planter part is way too small, and the glaze is wrecked, but, I learned three very important things from making this project; 1) when throwing try too slim things down to be more consistent. 2) Also when throwing try to be aware of proportions. And 3) when glaze among don't glaze too heavy or it will be very messy. I know this project isn't really a success but I did learn a lot from the process.
I tried to make this project a few times and each was unsuccessful, except for this project this one mug I made actually worked, mainly it was the handle I was having issues with, but it turned out all right. Not alike a normal cup or mug this one is very round almost spherical and is wide, it is meant to have a sort of organic/warm feeling to it. I'm not done yet so this is all I've got so far, it's about to go into the glaze kiln.
Unlike my first project, this one is more successful, with its spherical shape it takes the functional form of a bowl. This bowl was one of my many pieces in my glaze project, this project consisted of a chart where I recorded all the glazes I used and in what way and then established whether or not it was good, for this project I used brown for the bottom, green, white, and blue for the top half, and then dipped the rim in orange glaze, giving a dripping effect. I really like this project because of the details in the glaze and because it is a good functional piece.
This bowl, unlike most bowls, is flat and wide with only about 1 inch of depth, if you looked at it in a profile view its side come at a straight angle until it reaches the base, making it in a way triangular. This project being one of my first bowls was somewhat unsuccessful in the form of the project, but disregarding its oddball shape, its actually quite functional and the glaze is somewhat eye appealing. The glaze was layer black first, then white, and then midnight oil, making it black with some light dapple blue specks covering the piece (a glaze I really love). Although the piece is odd and probably wont hold soup very well, it has a rhythmic appearance, and a somewhat functional usability. Creating this project I was able to better learn how to pull the sides in a way that they wouldn't go flat like in this project. All together this project was a successful dud, it didn't fulfill the goal I had in my mind, but did turn out to be a attractive piece that can be used for soap, key, etc.
